Criterion D - Create

One of the important stages of Design Cycle is Create. Investigating, Designing, and Planning (all the previous steps) were meant to be used in Create to come up with the best product or process. It is not about the product being so well, it is basically for the process and what you learn from doing this project.
Well, on the 15th of September I started my whole create section with tracing the portrait. Well, we had the projector set up against a plain clean white wall and stuck the paper on it so that the actual photo reflected on it. Well, it was an easy process therefore fun. I do not know why, but I really enjoyed doing that and felt like I was doing a create job. It actually inspired me, which leads me to the next thought of mine that I actually discover one more characteristic of mine. I found out that I like tracing things. Because it was fun, I did not leave a line that was not drawn. By the way, it was done during IT class.
Then on the 17th of September, when I had an art class, the creative part started. I came up with my own ideas. I was thinking about myself and looking at my design specifications and thought about the materials i can use for my portrait. So this day was spent on some sketches in my workbook and ideas I came up with basing on my opinion as well as portraits of previous years.
Next day was the day we had Art. I prepared some numbers painted on a graph paper. The numbers were big, black and neat. The idea of painting them on a graph paper represent me that I love math. The numbers also symbolize my favor in Math class. Some others can also notice that even those numbers were very neat and even though they were not glued chronologically it looked neat anyway. I love neatness. I just can not stand dirtiness; however I do not have anything against with organization. As long as something (of me) is clean; it does not matter whether its unorganized or not. Again, I stuck those numbers on the background using a paper glue. [By the way, numbers were cut separately with a little bit of why frame.] When I put the glue on the back of the graph paper, the paint became moist and started making prints on my fingers. The consequence of that was that I was making the portrait dirty because I was touching them; however I solved the problem by using a wet cloth next to me and whipping the paint of my hand every time I dirtied them. Therefore the conflicts did not finish, I did not make enough numbers, there were very scarce from each other. As was planned, the background had to be filled with numbers; so I made some more. It was not a difficult thing to do.
On the 18th of September I also started painting my hair. The reason I painted them was that I love art and I love creating artworks. But the question was what color should I use. I could have used just black or dark brown which was the natural color of my real hair; I wanted to make it meaningful. So basing on my believes, red is craziness and black is control. And when we mix those two colors we come up with dark red, the color I like and it represents maturity to me. I, personally, want to be mature but sometimes my crazy side just takes over the control I have. That message was a media for my hair. I decided to paint my hair with a dark red but at some edges there would be more red and some areas would be covered with thick solid black color. That totally represents me. Sometimes I become so crazy but some of the time I control myself so badly that I forgot about what I really want. I just used water colors. It was a great fun process and easy.
Up to this point I was satisfied with what I have achieved but when I actually touched the face on the portrait I started the "Dark Ages".
DARK AGES
It was horrible to work on the face. First, i used soft crayons (those were chalk-like) and it actually had skin color which was a lot easier. But then I used black pen over the hair that was fallen on my face because of the wind. So writing with a black pen on a soft crayon was not a great idea, therefore I highlighted the shadowed areas on the face with the black pen. I was so displeased and felt like I should improve it somehow. It did not look real plus on the portrait I looked old. Well, then I talked to Ms. Sudra seeking for a solution. She suggested to put paint on, which sounded alright but I was not sure. The reason I was not sure was that putting paint on the crayon may solve the way it looks a little bit, but still there would be a layer under the pain. It will never go away. That bothered me, I do not know why I have this feeling that everything has to be in order and organization. I like things to look neat, but I also like when there are clean inside. Its just like my principles. In the real life, if I believe in something then I should believe that particular thing 100% and nothing else. That might be counted as one of my weaknesses; and that is also deeply related to how I am raised. Well, since I started painting I had no other way to go back and change. Ms. Sudra told me that there is a good thing about paints that you can put over and over again. It was true at the end.
While painting my face, I had a hard time to come up with skin color. Whenever I came up with a skin tone that matched mine I tested them and then started using them. However I did not realize from the beginning whether I have made enough or not; so I ran out of the paint. Then, when I mixed the skin tone again. I never got a chance to come up with the same one. So to solve this problem I mixed more of those skin colors and actually made 4 different types:
  1. regular skin color
  2. darker (for shadowed areas)
  3. lighter (for the parts where sun was shining)
  4. a really dark one (for the real dark areas)
Well, Ms. Sudra helped me a lot on these difficult times. I was disappointed in myself and could not stand the mess. The mess actually made me mad, so I realized that I get very angry and felt like crying when I feel like I will not be able to accomplish my goal. I felt very weak (mentally) because I was just on the way and I went down only on a small aspect. To overcome my conflict, I came up with a solution, which was to redo the whole process. But Ms. Sudra suggested me that even though I was going to make a new portrait, since I had a free time at the current moment I could just practice painting. Well, I did not care and I started using the 4 color she mixed for me to paint over the mess by looking at the original photo and looking at the shadowed/highlighted areas. Thankfully, Ms. Sudra's plan worked. At the end of that Art class, I had a totally different opinion about my portrait and did not need a solution to redo this project.
You can also see that there are baby footprints at the background.

There are photos that were taken during the photos:

Here is me satisfied with the facial part of my portraiture

So after I finished my portrait i felt like it look "naked". So I wanted to add more things and more expressions that actually told the audience who I am. So since I had the background done and the face and hair, I had to work on my neck and shirt. I had planned to put woods on the neck part which shows protection and fence at the same time. Fence because it represents that I like to be protected and safe but at the same time it also shows the countryside fence. I love countryside. The process went well and I have accomplished my plan however there were few additions such as putting dirt like facial mask on it. It was supposed to represent the nature after rain. It does not mean i like mud, but it should show that I love nature with the combination of the fence.
I was coming toward to the end my process, there was only a small part left for me to do. On the real photograph it was the shirt I was wearing or a part of my shoulder. So since I love photography I actually put some of the photos I had taken and cut them in pieces and stuck on. I had imagined something to look so cool and it was a combination of 3 photos that i took, however things didn't turn out that well. So I used sharpie to color the spaces between the shapes. It was an ok solution and my portrait looked really neat and nice.

The last part I worked on looked very rushed and even though it looked neat and all that, it could not represent me. Well, I actually spent more time at home and took a risk.
That risk was to redo the last little bit, but how. I really wanted something unique. So as I had watched like ages ago on Art Attack I wanted to make a model of mountains. I used newspaper and a lot of glue. I rolled or smudged the newspaper and put glue on the paper so it was connected. Then I let them dry. So I got this shape of my model, then to put a paint on I needed a plain surface. So used more glue to cover the surface by tissue. Tissue was a great deal because I carry tissue all around. Maybe it is something that I really love. =] So then after it was dry I colored them green and a little bit of brown using watercolor.

I was satisfied and felt like it really represents me. Here is how my last product looks like.

The Chosen Photo - Design #4
As you can see, it matches all the criterion of my design specifications and it looks simple and neat. Since the hair is bold and black, when I create my product I would make it dark red, so that red is craziness and black is control. So balance those 2, expresses me. Some other designs were whether too bright or too dark, but design #4 has a great balance. As was mentioned above, I want my face to be white so no pimples or anything bad is not shown. Then my hair looks very nice, straight, black and healthy. Other than that I love this photo because the look on it is just very mysterious. I believe this is the best photo of me ever. Plus I do not look fat on it.

Criterion A - investigation

Just for fun to start with:
Do you like your photos to be taken?
Well, I like my photos to be taken, however not always my photos are perfect or at least the way I want them to be. Because photos express you in a way and tells who you are and what you are interested in, I usually change the photos i do not like.
There are many beneficial things about changing your photos:
  • you can hide negative sides
  • you can highlight positive parts of your photo
  • you may look like one, you wanted to look like or just anything else
Back to Work!

This is a project in Technology class, and during this unit we will have a portrait of ourselves and alter the photo; however we will mix this project with Art class as well. I think this is a great opportunity to have my portrait and change it however I want; but it has to show who I am and what I am interested in. Through this project I will get to know myself and let other people know about me through the portrait. We are going to trace the edited photo by hand and color them or decorate them with any type of material as long as they symbolize and represent me and my principles.

The concentration question of this project is -
How can I use computer graphics programs to help me express myself?

There can be thousands and thousands of reasons why people alter their photos, but the aim of this perticular unit is that throughout this experiment we will learn ourselves. We will have time on our own and think about what we like and we dislike. The product of this experiment will show at least few understandings about me as a person.

Example from last year

I have heard that, last year there was a boy who was doing this experiment. The main conflict was that he hated his photos to be taken because he did not like how he looked. So he put too much effort into destroying his portrait. He used very birght colors and went over his photo over and over again. It was not the idea of making him hate his photo, the main outcome was that other people and himself understood that he did not like his photo taken. No matter the product was good or bad, the results were that at least he learned about himself and others as well.

This project relates to Risk Taker from the Learner Profile. It also contributes to Human Ingenuity from the Areas of Interaction. Its Human Ingenuity because we create a brand new portrait of ourselves with creative object that expresses us in some way.

So, to start with this project we decided to concentrate on one speficic part of the Learner Profile, which was Risk Taker as was mentioned above. I liked the photos that were taken on the road, however i wanted the photo which showed my whole body. But this was not the expectations of this project. So the photo above is the picture of me that I will use during this project.

Questions that will guide my investigation

What type of materials will help me to express my personality?

What do I like? What am I interested in?

How should I make my portrait mysterious but also interesting for others?

What characteristics of me would I want others to know?

What makes me unique from other people?

How do I want the product to look like?

Research and Resources
Well, on the 8th of September 2009, the beginning of this unit started with going out of school and taking pictures. Our technology teacher helped us to come up with ideas. Even though, we will edit the photos, it is better to have a plain background or even a background you wanted. That was very fun to do, all of us outside, but the problem was that we had only one camera between 15 students. It was ok to wait and take turns but it would be so much better for us if everyone had a camera (or at least 1 dijital camera in between 3 people or so) Well, some people stood next to walls or windows, some hid their faces, some stood next to trees, some brought basketballs or sports equipments to show their interest. I like unique things, I like going wild. And I went out of the school gate and sat on the road. I loved my idea. If it was possible, I wanted to lie on the road with my eyes closed. So that it looks relaxed even though I was on the road ( good thing there were no cars coming).

The day before we took our pictures, during Art class we investigated some portraits and atrists who created different self-portraits. I was amazed by some of the artworks. They used variety of different materials, for instance chocolate, strings, dirt, brown sugar. By the way, we looked at previous year's 10th grade IT posters and found out some creative ideas that would be useful for us.

Then on the 10th of September, we actually watched a brief movie. This movie was about Vik Muniz and his works. It was interesting to see someone who seeks to make unique interesting artworks such as a portrait using chocolate, strings and many other objects.

Design Specifications

  • multimedia
  • technology
  • photo of self (no one else)
  • express yourself
  • neat (because I like neatness)
  • it has to look like me
  • unique or at least one special thing that makes different from others'
  • not very colorful
  • it has to have something mysterious, which is part of me
  • interesting for the audience

Test for my product

For this project I will have a product which will be my portrait and to know whether it was a good one or not and to analyze whether my aim of this project succeeded or not; I have to make a test. So my test will be a survey around the school. But this survey is not a simple one that will ask questions from random people, I will choose the people who would be asked. The people who does not know me at all. So through this project I will express my characteristics and personality to other people and through this test I will make sure that aim was varified or not.

The questions of the survey:

  • Who do you think it is?
  • What do you think about this portrait and the person in it?
  • What information do you gain from it?
  • Please, give at least 3 or 4 descriptions about the person in it.
